Hello Discoverers,

let’s explore another beautiful part of the central Bohemian region. Located some 50 km west of Prague, Krivoklatsko protected landscape area is included among the UNESCO Biosphere reserves and it is considered for the National Park status. No wonder, it is literally one of the handful of places in Europe where the original low-altitude deciduous forest survived to the present days. In the heart of the area is the  Křivoklat Castle. It is one of the oldest in the country, and it was the childhood home of Charles IV. But it was also a hunting lodge of the Czech kings, surrounded by deep woods used as the royal hunting grounds since the dawn of the Czech statehood.

Except of a quick look into the courtyard of the castle, you will spend the day enjoying the early summer nature. You will walk in the woods and along the peaceful valley of the Rakovník brook, listening to the birds singing and bees humming.

PLAN OF THE DAY

We will meet at 8:00 am at the Prague Main Station (at our usual place in front of the ticket office).

Please be in time, because we will take a vintage motor train operated by the „Club of Railway Travellers“. The train ride to Krivoklat takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes, so you’ll have enough time to enjoy this cool old train!

A 10 minutes walk brings us to the castle, to stroll a while through the courtyard. A visit of the castle’s inside is not planned, because the left over interior is not really impressive.

The following 9 km will take us through the forest and alongside the brook. In the village of Pustověty we will have a break with some refreshments. Followed by another 4 km hike which will lead us directly to the local train stop.

At 3:10 pm we go to Beroun (arrival 4 pm). From the station we walk 10 mins to the local town square and go for food and drinks to a pub.

The train back leaves at 6 pm reaching Prague at 7 pm.

DIFFICULTY: Easy

(13 km of hiking with two small hills, mainly paved tracks)

Take with you: Good walking shoes, water and a small snack to survive until 4 pm.
