The Otava is a special treat for all canoers! It is a clean and quiet river ensuring a perfect ride both for newbies and experienced paddlers.
DIFFICULTY: EASY (i.e. suitable for people who haven’t canoed before)
MAX. GROUP SIZE: 12 people

The Otava river is a left tributary of the Vltava in the south-west of the Czech Republic. It is a lovely clean river flowing from the Šumava.
We are going to run the lower part from the pretty historical town of Strakonice. It is about a 100 km from Prague, but definitely worth the trip!
You can join even if you haven’t canoed before as long as you can swim. You should also be somewhat physically coordinated and have patience to learn a new motor skill.
I’m not a certified instructor but I have taught countless people the basics of canoeing.

About 13 km / 8 miles. 4 weirs (1 is not runnable)
LOGISTICS
We will meet at 8:10 AM at the bus station “Na Knížecí” – exit from the metro B station “Anděl”.
The bus ride to Strakonice takes 90 minutes.
We’ll be aiming to be back in Prague – Na Knížecí at 19:30. However, we will be as fast as the slowest members of our group and an unexpected delay is possible. This is a full-day event.
What to bring with you
- Shoes to wear in water
- Hat and Sunscreen
- Spare clothes (in case your canoe capsizes)
- Towel
- Swimwear
- Water and snack
Put all your staff to a small compact bag – we will put all our belongings into water-proof barrels and they are not very large.
Since dropping my phone in the river and losing my glasses during capsizing, I’ve been recommending everyone to keep their phone in a waterproof case and having glasses on a string while on the boat.
