Happy Howl – o – ween!

This trip will be a real treat (and no trick) for all of you who like to be a little scared and enjoy colorful autumn forest!

We will visit two “scary” places in the Kokorinsko Protected Landscape Area, a picturesque natural area 40 km/25 miles north of Prague.

The first one will be a delight for all thrill-seekers. “Vidimské lávky” (the footbridges of Vidim) is a very cool sight, a collection of 35 narrow planks put between rock tops to form suspended walkways (video here).

Originally an interesting feature of a 19th century chateau park, they fell in disrepair and the railings rot away. They are still walkable but caution is needed.

Visiting Vidimské lávky is strictly at your own risk!

Not to worry, if you are afraid of heights or just don’t trust yourself to walk safely 10 meters above the ground with no railings. You can go around on a forest path and wait for the more courageous (or crazy) members of the group.

The second scary highlight of the day, will be a pair of 9 metres (30 ft) high Devil’s Heads cut into the rocks near the town of Liběchov. How apt for the weekend of Halloween, right?

Čertovy hlavy, as they are known in Czech, were created by Václav Levý in 1841-1846 and they are the second largest carved heads in the world, after the carvings of Mount Rushmore in the United States.

Pretty cool, huh?

LOGISTICS

We will meet on Saturday October 30th, the eve of Halloween, at 8:15 AM, in front of the main ticket office at the Prague Main Railway Station.

We will take a special train service, featuring a retro diesel locomotive and wagons. Kokořínsko is not well served by public transport, especially at weekends, and so we will change in Mělník for a privately hired bus to take us to the starting point of the hike.

We will stop for (late) lunch in a nice local restaurant (not included).

Expected arrival time back in Prague is 18:00.

DIFFICULTY: Medium

(Good health and physical fitness is necessary)

Around 16 kilometers/10 miles and some 180 meters/600 ft of vertical gain. The route will include uneven trails with stairs, stones, roots etc. Wearing good walking shoes is a must!
